An open letter to the government from leaders across Cambridge highlights the role that the Greater Cambridge region can play in driving national economic growth.

Generating over £50bn of turnover per year for the UK, the Greater Cambridge region, the letter says, is ‘where innovation makes history and where the future comes first’.

'The ‘can-do’ spirit and ingenuity is hardwired, running from Newton’s law of gravity, through the rules of football codified here 175 years ago, the discovery of the structure of DNA, the medical and technological breakthroughs of IVF and microprocessor design', the letter reads.

The letter also sets out three core priorities that it says are a focus of a collaboration between the public and private sectors, charities, and community organisations known as ‘Cambridge Can 2030’.

First, Cambridge Can 2030 is aligned on a collective purpose of what the region can do for Britain, including what’s needed there to make it happen.

Second, the collaboration knows 'progress depends on working with others right across the country'. An example of this is Cambridge and Greater Manchester’s strategic partnership announced in 2023, which was strengthened recently with the announcement of a announcement of a new innovation hub.

Finally, the letter states that there is ‘not a moment to waste’, citing Britain’s participation in a ‘global race for talent and ideas’.

The letter finishes by saying that Britain’s best days can lie ahead and it has huge potential as a country. ‘We have a shining past and the next chapter can be brighter still - and Cambridge can and will help write it’, the letter concludes..
