Cambridge has been named in a list of the most beautiful places to visit in England.
The guide, compiled by The Times newspaper, includes a selection of 15 towns, villages and cities across the country, highlighting the key attractions of each, as well as where visitors can find the most spectacular views and scenery.
Published in November 2024, the guide includes York, Bath, the Cotswold villages and the Norfolk coast among others. The city of Cambridge is unique in that it is the only area of the county to feature in the guide.
The city's architectural splendour is evident in its historic colleges and chapels, which exude a mystical charm along the tranquil River Cam. Visitors can immerse themselves in this timeless atmosphere by engaging in the traditional activity of punting, offering serene views of the city's landmarks.
Beyond its academic heritage, Cambridge boasts picturesque streets, such as Trinity Street and Portugal Place, adorned with vibrant floral displays and colorful buildings. Expansive green spaces like Parker's Piece and Jesus Green provide residents and tourists with ample opportunities to enjoy the city's natural beauty.
This recognition by The Times underscores Cambridge's unique blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and serene landscapes, solidifying its status as a must-visit destination in England.
‘Unlike Oxford, which can be brash and busy, Cambridge is a place of robed figures emerging from ancient doorways and bumping away over cobbles on bicycles. To hire a punt and to float gently down the so-called Backs (the backs of many colleges) is to get a glimpse into a refined, timeless world,’ the guide noted.
