Cambridge Precision Engineering is looking to develop an entire unit to build on the success of its market-leading cobot innovation.
A Cambridge engineering firm is eyeing growth after winning a prestigious innovation award.
Saint Neots-based Cambridge Precision Ltd (CPL), which specialises in the med-tech, imaging, security, life sciences and robotics and forensic sectors, was named winner of the Manufacturing 4.0 category at the E&T Innovation Awards.
Held at the Savoy Place home of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the E&T Innovation Awards recognise and celebrate firms that are making a positive contribution when it comes to innovation across the breadth of science, engineering and technology. Woven into the categories was recognition for those who are tackling climate change, diversity, ethics and more.
CPL impressed the judges with its innovative use of Doosan cobots to free up its engineering team’s skills and keep them challenged.
Partnering with Mills CNC, CPL developed its Doosan cobot/five-axis ‘set and run’ system to supervise the machining of high-quantity, lower-complexity projects. CPL is reportedly the first precision engineering company in the UK to be using Doosan cobots in this way.
The judges said: “Cobot is an excellent example of new technology to lever quality, productivity, cost reduction, customer satisfaction and capacity – all that any manufacturing engineer could wish for. It is a good quality and well-articulated entry, ticking all our boxes for manufacturing excellence.”
Now, CPL – which has distribution and storage partners in the UK, Germany, France and Singapore – is planning to grow in 2022.
Speaking to the Cambridge Independent, Nick Raven, Operations Manager at CPL, explained: “Our prototype cobot was soon joined by a second and we are now looking at significant investment and the development of an entire unit, to house what is being recognised as a market-leading manufacturing innovation.
“Our new unit will be opening in St Neots in 2022, to support increasing demand for complex precision engineered components.
“We want to grow our workforce by more than 20 staff – skilled engineers, trainees and apprentices, and we believe that this award illustrates the quality, innovation and national significance of our business.”
