5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Pause Your Job Search Over the Festive Period

The holidays are almost upon us and you might be thinking that it’s time to wind down your job hunting activities until at least the New Year. But why!?

While it’s true that the end of year period often sees many HR personnel out of the office and a decline in all round business activity, we’re here to tell you why it is actually a great time to keep your finger on the pulse when it comes to finding and securing your dream job.

1. Many organisations still have recruitment budgets to spend

Most organisations have annual budgets for the different aspects of their business, including recruitment. Now, there’s a good chance that any recruitment budget has to be used by the end of the year, which makes December actually a great time to find a new job.

Hiring managers would much rather spend any budget they have than lose it – especially as the latter could lead to them having less funds allocated next year.

2. You can hit the ground running in January

Don’t wait until January to start your job search. Seize the opportunity now and be ready to start your new position in January instead.

The reality is that January is typically a busy time for businesses and hiring managers often have a lot on their plates at the start of the year. This means that many simply won’t have time to peruse CVs and conduct interviews.

By getting your foot in the door now, you could be hired and complete any company inductions before the New Year even begins. This could mean you actually receiving your first pay packet come the end of January!

3. Beat the competition

With all the other job hunters out there (wrongly) assuming that it’s best to wait until the New Year to continue their search, you can gain a competitive advantage. The reduced number of applicants over the festive period means you have a greater chance of standing out (not that you wouldn’t anyway, but any advantage is a bonus, right?).

So while others are relaxing and watching Santa Claus: The Movie, you can be getting ahead of them in the recruitment race and putting yourself in prime position.

4. Take advantage of the festive mood

Despite the unprecedented situation this year, Christmas tends to be a time when people are cheerier than usual. Add to this the natural festive lull and it makes for an excellent time to get your CV and covering letter in front of the people who matter.

Catching hiring managers when they are in a good mood and have time on their hands can be enormously advantageous.

5. Christmas doesn’t actually mean businesses will be closed

It’s 2020 (as if you needed reminding) and Christmas no longer triggers businesses to shut down ahead of the New Year. With many staff working from home, most organisations will actually be operating almost as normal this month.

Let’s also not forget that interviews can be conducted remotely nowadays, which means there are actually very few barriers to securing your dream job this December.
